After a long time away – nearly two years – we have returned to the intrigue blog. Yes, it was back in February of 2007 when I put the blog together. It was thrilling to get the first post out and online. Really it was a test to see how the whole process came together. Very much a learning experience to figure out this whole WordPress thing. Overall, it was not that hard. I just wanted to read up what I could before doing anything, to be on the safe side. Then again, if the blog imploded right at the beginning, nobody would even notice. Well, it actually worked out just fine. Installing the software went fine and I was able to get the account going too.
The problem was, I didn’t have anything to add to the blog – so it languished for the next 2 years. I’ve gotten motivated again, and decided to dust off the intrigue blog and make it active. Hopefully this time, to be posted to on a regular basis.
But before doing that, I decided to check and see if the WordPress software had changed in the two years since I installed it. Well, well, well… lo and behold! It sure has. It’s now version 2.7 and we had 2.1 installed.
Ok, so first things first, what does the new version do? I checked the info and the new features all sounded very compelling so I figured it would be a good idea to update the software before doing anything else. The problem was, I didn’t have a clue how to update it! Not exactly a one-click update operation.
No biggie – I went to their site and read through the “upgrade” instructions. Being a pessimist, I also looked through the “expanded” upgrade instructions to make sure I didn’t overlook any details. I spent quite a while reading and rereading it. All to make sure I didn’t destroy any valuable files in the process.
Finally, the time arrived and I felt confident I knew the procedure to complete the upgrade. Not for the faint of heart but it seemed very straightforward as they really walk you through the process. I deleted what they said to delete, and uploaded the new files. Went back into the admin section, and got my confirmation that the software was good.
Only issue was the database was considered “old”. It needed a refresh. It even offered to do it for me. This I like to hear! So, sure enough, the database is updated and I get logged in to the admin.
Well, look at this! It seems the place has undergone a major redecorating since I last visited. They have this dashboard thingie now with all kinds of info. Very nice stuff!
Be right back…
