What makes art? Modern and postmodern artists have been redefining the conventions since the early 20th century. Artists experiment with ideas, style and mediums – pushing the boundaries of what we see and believe. Today we find ourselves amazed by chocolate architecture, junk statues, street art and found objects. Here are some of our favorite examples of unconventional art.
1) Disney Nature’s Monkey Kingdom; chocolate; Pastry Chef Erich Herbitschek, Brigette Warkins Reynders & John Dettman; 2015
During the Wine and Food Festival at Epcot, amazing pastry artists showcased their skills by recreating scenes and characters from various Disney movies using chocolate.
2) The Individual; wooden stepladder, discarded wood, light projector; Tim Noble & Sue Webster; 2012
These artists make assemblages from collected junk and other objects and use light to create projected shadows that resemble identifiable subjects. http://www.timnobleandsuewebster.com/the_individual_2012.html
3) Pictures of Garbage (The Gipsy Magna, Mother and Children Suellen, Marat/Sebastião); various trash, camera; Vik Muniz; 2010
As showcased in the amazing documentary, Waste Land, Muniz “paints†the catadores he meets using garbage from the dump in which they work. The film is a beautiful masterpiece in itself. http://www.wastelandmovie.com/gallery.html
